In the last fiscal year, Bangladesh paid Tk 28,694 crore in capacity charges to private power plants. Among these, five coal-based plants accounted for Tk 16,073 crore, representing over 56% of the total. The highest charge went to India’s Adani Power. Data from the Power Development Board (PDB) shows that none of the coal-fired plants met the typical 80% capacity utilization requirement. The Payra power plant operated at the highest rate among them, achieving 69% utilization in FY 2023-24.
Adani Power’s Godda plant in Jharkhand, India, provided the most electricity, utilizing 62% of its 1,496 MW capacity and generating 816.67 crore units. Despite lower utilization, the PDB still had to pay capacity charges for the full capacity, amounting to Tk 5,823.71 crore, which is 20.3% of the total capacity charges.
