BTTC Recommends Import Tax Removal on Rice

Industry: Commodity, Food

The Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission (BTTC) has proposed waiving all import taxes on rice to combat rising domestic prices after floods affected supply. Despite record production of 40 million tonnes, prices have surged by Tk 4-10 per kg in recent weeks, with coarse rice now retailing at Tk 55-56 per kg.

Although the government cut the import duty from 62.5% to 25%, only 22 tonnes of rice have been imported. The BTTC’s proposal, sent to relevant ministries, aims to increase local supply following the loss of over 0.84 million tonnes due to flooding. Experts warn that market manipulation by traders is contributing to price hikes and advocate for stricter government monitoring to ensure affordability.
