Bangladesh’s gas-based power plants require 120 crore cubic feet of gas daily but receive only 92 crore cubic feet, resulting in frequent load shedding. The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) struggles to operate efficiently due to overdue payments of about 20,000 crore taka, which hampers gas supply and production. Currently, BPDB can generate around 5,500 megawatts, significantly below demand. The situation is exacerbated by stagnant local gas extraction and financial barriers to LNG imports, leaving many of the total 12,384 megawatt capacity plants shut. Urgent solutions are needed to stabilize electricity production.
