Transmission loss in Bangladesh increased for the second consecutive year, with projections indicating further rises in coming years due to mismatched growth in power generation and industrial demand. In FY2023-24, electricity transmission losses exceeded Tk 3,200 crore, a cost ultimately borne by consumers. Over the past 14 years, major power plants have been established far from Dhaka, the hub of industrial activity and electricity consumption. Electricity is transmitted over distances of up to 500 km, from plants like Adani in Jharkhand, Matarbari in Cox’s Bazar, Payra in Patuakhali, and Rampal in Mongla, exacerbating inefficiencies and increasing the burden on the transmission infrastructure.
