On November 20, Bangladesh’s Advisory Council approved a draft ordinance to repeal the “Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy Supply (Special Provision) Act, 2010,” criticized for its indemnity provisions. The law, passed in 2010 to address energy shortages, allowed the government to fast-track power projects by bypassing regular procedures. However, it led to corruption, inefficiencies, and misuse of public funds, as well as limiting transparency. A recent High Court ruling declared certain sections of the Act illegal. The law’s tenure was extended multiple times, with the latest extension in September 2021, before the decision to repeal it.
