The cost of the controversial Ghorashal power plant repowering project has been proposed to rise by Tk 55.47 crore, bringing the total project cost to Tk 2,226 crore. This increase has raised questions, as experts argue that constructing a new power plant would have been less expensive. The Power Division has submitted the third amendment proposal to the Planning Commission, which will review it during a Project Evaluation Committee meeting. The project, initially approved in 2016 at Tk 2,029.24 crore, has been delayed for eight years, leading to an increase in costs.
As of now, 87 percent of the work is completed, but the project is expected to take an additional 1.5 years to finish. The slow pace has led to an extra expenditure of Tk 197.68 crore. Experts have criticized the project’s high cost, suggesting that alternative, more cost-effective solutions could have been pursued, highlighting concerns about potential financial mismanagement.
