Bangladesh reports the highest rate of premature births globally, with 488,600 premature births annually. Despite progress in neonatal care, quality concerns persist, and three newborns die every hour due to prematurity and low birth weight (LBW). Premature births account for 16.2% of all births, and 23% of babies are born with LBW, second highest globally. Although Bangladesh has expanded interventions like Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) and Special Care Newborn Units (SCANUs), significant gaps remain, such as a lack of trained staff and essential equipment. Experts stress the need for policy changes, better access to corticosteroids, and improvements in healthcare infrastructure to reduce infant mortality and enhance care for premature babies.
