BD Ranks 3rd in South Asia for Ratio of Low-Paid Workers

Economic Tag: Income

Bangladesh has the third-highest percentage of low-paid workers in South Asia, with 11.2% of wage earners receiving less than half the median hourly wage, according to the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Global Wage Report 2024-25. Sri Lanka leads with 25.9%, followed by Bhutan at 13.8%, while Pakistan has the lowest ratio at 9.4%. Globally, women, migrants, and informal workers dominate low-wage groups, and 11.5% of workers worldwide are classified as low-paid. Encouragingly, the report notes a global trend of declining wage inequality since 2000, with the most significant reductions observed in low-income countries.

Real wages worldwide grew by 1.8% in 2023, with a projected 2.7% increase for 2024—the highest in 15 years. Emerging economies have outpaced advanced ones in wage growth, especially in Asia and the Pacific. However, the ILO highlights persistent wage disparities, urging strengthened wage policies, inclusive economic strategies, and collective bargaining to address inequities and promote fair wages.
