At a seminar on “The State of Tea Industry in Bangladesh: Challenges and Prospects,” speakers emphasized the need for advanced research by the Bangladesh Tea Research Institute (BTRI) and universities to develop tea plant varieties resilient to climate change while ensuring high yield and quality. Prof. AFM Saiful Islam of Sylhet Agricultural University highlighted that Bangladesh’s tea production is lower than India and Sri Lanka due to outdated tea varieties. Climate change, droughts, and pest infestations are also reducing yields. Experts urged the government to invest in research, develop climate-resistant tea varieties, and establish a technological hub in Sylhet to support innovation and industry growth. They also called for ethical practices to improve tea quality and exports.
