The 1,320 MW coal-fired Norinco-Rural Power Company Limited (NRPCL) power plant in Kalapara, Patuakhali, has begun trial production. The first unit started generating 170 MW and will gradually reach its 660 MW capacity. Both units are expected to enter commercial production by mid-2025, contributing 10% of Bangladesh’s electricity demand. Equipped with ultra-supercritical technology, the plant adheres to international environmental standards. Construction began in 2019 but faced delays. With a production cost of Tk 9 per unit, the plant currently has 1.25 lakh tonnes of coal stockpiled.
