Shrimp exports in Bangladesh have halved over the past seven years, forcing many processing units to shut down. Out of 109 registered factories, only 48 remain operational—30 in Khulna and 18 in Chattogram—due to a severe raw material shortage, with factories receiving just 7% of their required shrimp input. The industry, which once thrived on export subsidies and high demand, now struggles with environmental issues, high loan interest rates (13-14%), and outdated farming methods. The domestic supply crisis has affected 60 lakh people dependent on the sector. Annual processing capacity stands at 4 lakh tonnes, but production remains far below demand. Climate change, cyclones, and financial mismanagement have further worsened the situation. While competitors like India and Vietnam have shifted to vannamei shrimp, Bangladesh has yet to approve its commercial cultivation. Corruption and loan mismanagement among factory owners have also played a significant role in the industry’s decline.
