At the end of 2024, the non-performing loans (NPLs) of Janata Bank rose to 72%, the highest in the banking sector. According to Bangladesh Bank’s report, the NPLs of Janata Bank stood at 60,345 crore taka (66.15%) at the end of September 2024, which increased to 67,147 crore taka by December 2024. The total loans disbursed amounted to 93,263 crore taka, meaning NPLs increased by 6,802 crore taka in three months. About 60,000 crore taka of these loans became uncollectible. Following political changes, loans to influential borrowers, particularly those linked to the previous government, became defaulted. By December 2024, the total NPLs in the banking sector reached 3,45,765 crore taka, or 20.2% of total loans. Over a year, NPLs increased by 2 lakh crore taka, which had previously been hidden.
