In the first six months (July-December) of FY 2024-25, the government borrowed Tk 6,744 crore from banks, raising total bank debt to Tk 4,75,666 crore by December. Non-bank borrowing also increased, reaching Tk 24,688 crore, compared to Tk 7,090 crore in the same period last fiscal year. Overall, net domestic borrowing stood at Tk 31,432 crore, 69 times higher than the Tk 456 crore in FY 2023-24. The rise in borrowing was mainly to repay previous debts, but the government repaid Tk 58,116 crore to Bangladesh Bank instead of borrowing from it. Additionally, Tk 12,542 crore was paid for fertilizer and electricity bills through special bonds. Non-bank debt reached Tk 4,58,130 crore, while net borrowing from savings certificates fell by Tk 2,244 crore. The revised budget plans Tk 1,17,000 crore in domestic borrowing for the fiscal year, with Tk 99,000 crore from banks and Tk 18,000 crore from non-bank sources.
