In December 2024, inward remittances disbursed through agent banking reached Tk 1.73 trillion, marking a 21.16% increase from Tk 1.43 trillion in December 2023. Compared to September 2024’s Tk 1.65 trillion, the figure rose by 4.67%. Rural areas received 90.12% of the total, while urban areas accounted for Tk 77.31 billion. The top five banks handled 95.75% of remittance distribution, with Islami Bank leading at Tk 923 billion (53.23%). Dutch-Bangla Bank (26.92%), Bank Asia (7.98%), Al-Arafah Islami Bank (4.43%), and Agrani Bank (3.19%) followed. The rise is attributed to the 2.5% cash incentive on remittances and financial literacy campaigns. Agent banking, introduced in 2013, provides financial services to underserved areas, offering deposits, loans, and remittance transfers. The central bank’s guidelines ensure compliance with AML/CFT measures, customer protection, and financial security, reinforcing agent banking as an effective alternative for financial inclusion.
