Despite a significant rise in the number of women employed in Bangladesh’s banking sector, their representation in leadership roles remains low. As of December 2024, women made up 17.57% of the banking workforce, with 37,649 female employees out of 214,245 total employees. However, only a few women occupy senior roles like Managing Directors (MD) and Deputy Managing Directors (DMD). The participation of women in higher positions drops from 18.37% at entry-level to just 9.73% at senior levels. This decline is partly due to higher turnover among women, particularly mid-career, and the lack of facilities like daycare centers. In 2024, only two female MDs were appointed in the sector. Additionally, female participation in board positions decreased from 14.05% to 13.61%. Although policies exist to promote gender equality, women’s advancement in the banking sector remains limited, with factors such as family support and childcare impacting their career progression.
