The government is preparing to launch an onshore hydrocarbon exploration bidding round after 28 years to address growing natural gas demand. Petrobangla has drafted a Model Production Sharing Contract (MPSC) with more attractive terms for international oil companies (IOCs), linking gas prices to Brent crude at around 8% with a cap. The expected gas price is approximately $5.50 per MMBtu, nearly double the current highest onshore gas price. Bangladesh currently imports LNG at over $10 per MMBtu, while domestic production falls short of the 4,000 mmcfd demand, supplying only 2,883 mmcfd. The last offshore bidding round in 2023 saw no IOC participation, prompting efforts to improve contract terms.
