Bangladesh’s mobile subscriber base dropped by 77 lakh from July 2024 to January 2025, with mobile internet users declining by 1.1 crore, according to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission. The decline is attributed to political shifts following the ousting of the Awami League government in August 2024, increased supplementary duty on mobile services, and economic pressures. Total mobile users fell to 18.65 crore, while mobile internet users dropped to 13 crore. Rising costs led to a reduction in multiple SIM usage, with Banglalink losing 45 lakh users, Robi Axiata 25 lakh, and Grameenphone 7 lakh. Operators reported difficulties acquiring new users due to higher SIM taxation and economic constraints, while experts highlighted safety concerns and regulatory challenges.
