Internet subscribers in Bangladesh will now receive 10 Mbps internet speed for Tk 500, up from the previous 5 Mbps, as announced by the Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB). This change aligns with the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission’s (BTRC) “One Country, One Rate” policy. While the BTRC had proposed price reductions, the ISPAB opted to double the speed instead, emphasizing quality of service. Concerns were raised at a roundtable discussion about corruption in policymaking, the need for telecom license reforms, and the poor quality of internet service despite claims of low prices. There were also calls for ensuring no more internet shutdowns and for improving Bangladesh’s global digital ranking. The BTRC chairman criticized past manipulation of policies and political influence in ISP licensing.
