In February 2025, registered mobile banking customers in Bangladesh surpassed 24 crore, adding 1.14 crore new users from January’s 23.93 crore, according to Bangladesh Bank. Despite the rise in users, transaction volume fell from Tk 1,71,664 crore in January to Tk 1,59,080 crore in February. Cash-in transactions dropped by Tk 3,261 crore to Tk 45,726 crore, and cash-out transactions declined by Tk 4,295 crore to Tk 51,212 crore. Utility bill payments totaled Tk 2,267 crore, salary disbursements Tk 5,075 crore, merchant payments Tk 6,923 crore, and remittances via mobile banking Tk 1,268 crore. Analysts attribute mobile banking’s rapid growth, especially among low- and middle-income groups, to the convenience and accessibility it offers. Since its 2010 launch, 13 providers now operate, with bKash leading the market, followed by Nagad. Bangladesh Bank emphasized that mobile financial services are crucial to advancing towards a cashless economy.
