Govt to import 12,500 MT sugar from US

The government has approved the import of 12,500 metric tons (MT) of sugar and 220,000 MT of fertilizer to meet domestic demands. The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) gave the green light to various proposals during a virtual meeting. The Commerce Ministry’s proposal entails Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) importing sugar from Accentuate Technology Inc, USA, through an international open tender system, costing Tk66.27 crore at Tk82.85 per kilogram (kg).

The Industries Ministry received approval for two separate proposals, permitting Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) to import 60,000 MT of urea fertilizer and 10,000 MT of phosphoric acid. Furthermore, the CCGP approved six proposals from the Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) to import 160,000 MT of different fertilizers. In another decision, the CCGP authorized the extension of the consultant’s cost for the “Water Supply and Sanitation in 23 Municipalities of Bangladesh (1st Revised)” project, managed by the Department of Public Health Engineering. The project’s consultant, a joint venture of Ranhill, Farhat, and DDC, will receive an additional Tk11.1 crore for their services.

This could lead to a 2.4 percent drop in production to 36.8 million tonnes.
