Denim Producers Thrive Amid Global Crisis But Low Prices Persist

Industry: RMG, RMG & Textile

Despite the ongoing global economic crisis and reduced demand for clothing, Bangladesh’s denim producers are experiencing a substantial number of orders from both traditional and non-traditional markets. While the country’s apparel sector has struggled with negative earnings and fewer orders, the denim industry has seen an increase in purchases, particularly from buyers in the European Union (EU) and other non-traditional markets. However, prices for denim products remain low.

The US market, which is the largest recipient of Bangladeshi denim, has been slow in terms of orders but is expected to improve soon. Although the industry is receiving orders, manufacturers are facing challenges as they produce below the break-even point due to low prices and rising production costs. The industry advocates for shared expenses among manufacturers, brands, and retailers to support sustainable apparel production and raise prices accordingly. Awareness campaigns and exhibitions in export destinations are also proposed to create consumer demand for sustainable apparel manufacturing.
