Flourishing BD-Japan Bilateral Relationship and Untapped Potential

Economic Tag: Trade

The bilateral trade relationship between Bangladesh and Japan has flourished over the last five decades, benefiting both countries. Japan has become one of Bangladesh’s primary trading partners, particularly in the apparel and ready-made garment (RMG) sector, accounting for approximately 83% of Bangladesh’s exports to Japan. While there is untapped trade potential, the Comprehensive Economic Partnership and General System of Preference have facilitated trade growth. A free trade agreement would further enhance market access. In addition to trade, Japan’s foreign direct investment (FDI) in Bangladesh has increased, with over 300 Japanese companies operating in the country. The establishment of the Japanese Economic Zone (JEZ) in Narayanganj is expected to attract more Japanese investments, creating job opportunities. Collaboration in technology and infrastructure will strengthen the partnership between the two countries as Bangladesh transitions into a developing nation. Japan remains a crucial and strategic partner for Bangladesh’s developmental journey.
