Trade Discrepancy between BD and China stands at $13 billion

Economic Tag: Trade

There is a big difference in Bangladesh’s trade statistics with China. The integrated data analysis of the relevant authorities shows that the gap between the two countries’ official data on the size of bilateral trade in 2021 was 568 crore 1 lakh dollars. In last year’s statistics, this gap increased to 752 crore 87 lakh dollars. Accordingly, in the last two years, the amount of discrepancy in the trade data of the two countries has exceeded 1 thousand 300 crore (13 billion) dollars. There are complaints that many traders are evading customs duties through under-invoicing (a technique to show the import price is lower than the actual value). In some cases, there are allegations of money laundering through China to a third country through over-invoicing. The tendency of traders to increase and decrease these prices is now being attributed as the main reason for the discrepancy in the trade statistics of the two countries.

According to statistics compiled by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) from NBR data, the trade between Bangladesh and China in 2021 was slightly more than 1 thousand 946 crore 11 lakh dollars. According to Bangladesh Bank and EPB statistics, the value of trade between Bangladesh and China in 2022 was  2 thousand 24 crore 95 lakh dollars. According to this, the total trade value of the two countries in 2021 and 2022 was 3 thousand 975 crore 6 lakh dollars.

Meanwhile, the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC) statistics show that the value of trade between the two countries in 2021 was slightly more than 2 thousand 514 crore 13 lakh dollars. The trade amount between the two countries in 2022 was 2 thousand 777 crores 82 lakhs 39 thousand 183 dollars. In 2021 and 2022, the volume of trade between the two countries was 5 thousand 291 crore 95 lakh dollars. As such, the gap between the trade data of the two countries in two years is 1 thousand 316 crore 89 lakh dollars.
