Fruit-bagging technology has been promoted in mango orchards in the region to protect mangoes from pests and improve yield quality. Farmers have found success in using fruit bags for various mango varieties, keeping the fruits fresh and spot-free. However, the high cost limits its adoption to medium and large farms. Fruit bags are utilized before the paddy harvest, reducing the need for harmful chemicals. According to a former director of DAE, the demand for fruit bags in mango farming has been increasing by about 1 crore to 1.5 crore pieces per year.
The technology has the potential to open new doors for mango exports, as it preserves fruit quality and extends shelf life. Researchers have been working on this approach for several years, and private organizations are importing specialized bags. By using fruit bags, mangoes can be protected from diseases and pests, boosting the export volume. Additionally, the bagged mangoes command higher market prices, benefiting growers economically.
