BSC Reports Strong Q1 Profit Growth of 23%

The Khanpur Inland Container and Bulk Terminal project faces a major cost increase and timeline extension. Initially budgeted at Tk 3.92 billion, the project cost is now projected to rise by over 62% to Tk 6.36 billion, with the completion date extended to June 2027.

Local exporters are urging the government to lower cargo fares and increase cargo space for fresh vegetables and fruits to enhance export earnings. The Bangladesh Fruits, Vegetables & Allied Products Exporters Association (BFVAPEA) has appealed to various state agencies and Biman Bangladesh Airlines, citing challenges such as tripled cargo fares and limited space.

The Chittagong Customs Authority will hold an online e-auction on 18 September, featuring 46 lots of goods, including a 2022 Mercedes-Benz valued at Tk16.1 million and a 2021 Land Cruiser priced at Tk5.17 million. The auction will also include various items like cloth, security tags, tiles, juices, engine oil, and ceramic vases. Bidding opens on 8 September and closes on 18 September at 5 pm, with viewing of items available on 11 and 12 September.

The Dhaka Elevated Expressway (DEE) marked its first anniversary, recording 12.7 million vehicles during this period. The 11.5-km expressway, which stretches from the Airport to Farmgate and Kawran Bazar, has generated Tk 1.04 billion in tolls since its inauguration on September 3, 2023. Notably, 98% of the toll revenue came from private cars and microbuses, which are charged Tk 80 for using the expressway.

Services at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA), Bangladesh's largest airport, have significantly improved, leading to quicker passenger processing. Recent changes, including the appointment of a new chairman for the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, have contributed to these enhancements. Previously, passengers faced long queues, delays, and harassment from officials, but now they experience faster check-ins and baggage retrieval, with minimal wait times and no harassment.

The Chittagong Port Authority is facing a financial crisis due to Tk 1,106 crore in fixed deposits held across five banks, including four controlled by S Alam Group, which have not returned the funds despite repeated requests. This has disrupted the port's ability to fund reinvestment and development projects.
