The Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) has raised concerns over the government’s continuous borrowing from the Bangladesh Bank, citing its potential to create inflationary pressure in an already soaring economy. CPD Executive Director Fahmida Khatun emphasized the impact of increased money supply resulting from ongoing borrowing, leading to inflationary pressures. The think tank highlighted that this pattern of borrowing further erodes macroeconomic discipline. According to banking regulator data, the government borrowed Tk 82,056.91 crore from the banking sector in the first 10 months of the fiscal year, with the majority coming from the central bank. This borrowing trend marks a significant increase compared to the previous fiscal year. The CPD stressed the need for monitoring market-aligned exchange rates, noting that the narrowing gap indicates a market-based USD rate ranging between Tk 105 and Tk 116, similar to the current rate.
