The biweekly chilli market in Mollarhat, located in Shariatpur witnesses a thriving trade of around Tk 15-16 crore per week during the high season. Taking place on Saturdays and Tuesdays, this market attracts both local traders and major food processing corporations seeking dried chillies of exceptional quality. The region’s fertile soil and favorable climate contribute to the successful cultivation of chillies, with farmers opting to dry most of their crops due to the green chillies’ short shelf life.
As the demand for dried chillies remains high, farmers receive satisfactory prices for their produce. With approximately 250 regular traders and around 300 to 350 laborers finding employment, the market serves as a hub for the trade, contributing to the local economy. Moreover, wholesalers from various regions across the country come to Mollarhat to purchase dried chillies, further solidifying its reputation as a leading market for top-quality products.
