A private initiative has successfully established the country’s first floating solar power plant in Chapainawabganj Sadar. The power plant, located within a factory’s pond, aims to generate electricity while also supporting fish farming. The project, funded by Jools Power Limited, has connected the generated electricity to the national grid.
The Nawab Auto Rice Mill hosts the innovative solar power plant in two of its ponds, with over 1,500 solar panels installed. The plant has a daily production capacity of 20 megawatts, supplying the mill’s electricity needs and feeding the excess power into the national grid. This environmentally friendly approach allows for increased solar power adoption, providing cost-effective electricity generation without compromising agricultural land or the ecosystem.
The floating solar panels are made of food-grade plastic, ensuring the integrity of water quality and minimizing disruption to the fish’s life cycle. The project operates under the OPEX model, with the mill purchasing electricity at a lower rate than the local distribution company. After 12 years of paying bills, the entire plant will be transferred to the buyer, allowing for free electricity usage with maintenance costs. Further expansion of the project to other ponds is under consideration.
