The gap between inflation and wage rate growth in Bangladesh reached a nine-month high in May, exacerbating the cost-of-living crisis for low-income groups as consumer prices continue to outpace real incomes. According to data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the wages of low and unskilled workers grew by 7.32%, falling 2.62 percentage points short of the 9.94% inflation rate recorded in the same month. The Wage Rate Index (WRI) of the BBS, which considers wages across 44 occupations, rose by 7.23% in April, lagging behind the 9.24% spike in the Consumer Price Index. This marks the 16th consecutive month that wage growth has trailed inflation.
