Wholesale traders in the capital have reported a significant decrease in the price of onions. However, retailers state that the price reduction has not yet fully reflected in the retail market due to the slow arrival of new onions. The previous stock, purchased at higher rates, is still being sold. Importers have already brought in onions to the wholesale market, and if these imported onions flood the retail markets, further price reductions are expected.
Market visits to Malibagh, Moghbazar, and Karwan Bazar confirmed these findings, with retailers selling desi onions at prices ranging from Tk 75 to Tk 85 per kg. Retail prices have dropped by Tk 15 to Tk 20 in the past three days. The wholesale market has seen a more significant decrease in prices, with domestic onions dropping by over Tk 50 per kg. Import prices were observed at Tk 60-62 per kg in the Karwan market. Retailers anticipate running out of domestic onions soon and plan to introduce imported onions. The import of onions from India began with approximately 433,000 metric tons of onions allowed for import. The average import cost, including customs duty, is about Tk 19 per kg.
