Following the resumption of onion imports from India, the wholesale price of onions in Dhaka has decreased by Tk40-Tk45 per kilogram. At the largest wholesale market, Shyambazar, onions were being sold at Tk35-40 per kg. This is a significant drop compared to the price of local onions, which were sold for Tk90 per kg a week ago. The arrival of Indian onions has led to the decrease in prices, with Indian onions now being sold at Tk35-Tk40 per kg and local onions at Tk45-Tk50 per kg in the wholesale market.
However, the retail market has not been affected by the price drop, with prices ranging between Tk70 and Tk85 per kg. It is expected that the retail prices will also decrease in the coming days. The government’s decision to import onions was aimed at reducing the burden on people with limited incomes who were facing abnormally high prices. The efforts to increase onion production in the country have resulted in a slight drop in production from 35 lakh tonnes to 34 lakh tonnes this year, with a net production of 24.53 lakh tonnes due to wastage and storage issues. The annual demand for onions in Bangladesh is approximately 28 lakh tonnes.
