The SS Power Plant, owned by the S Alam Group, had to halt operations just four days after its trial generation due to a shortage of coal. The plant, which was supplying 300 to 375 MW to the national grid, stopped production on 8 June 2023 evening. The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) confirmed the closure.
The SS power plant had been generating electricity on an experimental basis to address shortages after the Payra power plant shut down on June 5. However, with the scarcity of coal and the ongoing construction of the transmission line, the plant had to cease operations. BPDB stated that the shutdown had minimal impact due to a decrease in electricity demand caused by rain and lower temperatures. It is estimated that it will take an additional two months for the SS power plant to start commercial production, according to the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB).
