In the last 12 years, Bangladesh has experienced remarkable growth in mushroom production, increasing nearly threefold. According to the agriculture ministry, mushroom production rose from 14,500 tonnes in the fiscal year 2010-11 to 41,000 tonnes in the fiscal year 2021-22, valued at around Tk 800 crore. Technological innovations and cost reductions have played a significant role in this achievement. To further capitalize on these advancements, the agriculture minister highlighted the need to promote low-cost machinery and simple cultivation techniques during a workshop titled “Improve Nutrition and Reduce Poverty through Mushroom Cultivation.” Mushrooms are highly nutritious, containing about 22% protein compared to 8% in rice and 12% in wheat. By raising awareness about the various consumption possibilities and expanding the market, mushrooms can contribute significantly to Bangladesh’s economy. With the potential for exporting mushrooms to other countries, this crop offers promising opportunities for growth and development.
