Rangpur, a prominent litchi-growing region, anticipates a thriving litchi trade worth approximately Tk 1,000 crore this season, according to officials from the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE). Both litchi growers and traders are delighted with the abundant production, favorable prices, and flourishing business of this seasonal fruit. Notably, the Bedana variety of litchi from Dinajpur has made its debut in international markets, generating hope and excitement among farmers, experts, and government officials. A consignment of 600 kilograms of luscious Bedana litchi was successfully exported to France and Italy, meeting international standards in terms of quality and packaging. In addition to Rangpur, neighboring districts such as Kurigram, Gaibandha, Nilphamari, and Lalmonirhat have contributed to the impressive harvest, with approximately 18,000 tonnes of litchis collected from 1,749 hectares of land. This thriving litchi industry has created employment opportunities for many individuals, including transport workers and artisans engaged in basket making and fruit plucking. The region’s markets are bustling with various litchi varieties, attracting buyers from different parts of the country. The success of this year’s litchi production has brought immense satisfaction to growers, traders, and farmers alike.
