Bangladesh is set to inaugurate a historic undersea pipeline, spanning 110km, to transport crude oil and diesel. This groundbreaking project, commissioned tomorrow, eliminates the need for lighter vessels and saves approximately Tk 800 crore annually. The Single Point Mooring (SPM) initiative includes two parallel pipelines, one for crude oil and another for diesel.
The pipeline will handle between 10 lakh and 14 lakh tonnes of crude and about 96 percent of diesel imports each year. With a diameter of 36 inches between the mooring point and Maheshkhali, and 18 inches from the storage facility to the Eastern Refinery, the pipeline offers significant capacity. The project, funded by the Exim Bank of China at a cost of Tk 7,124 crore, is nearing completion after achieving 97 percent progress. This revolutionary pipeline will transform fuel transportation in Bangladesh, enhancing efficiency and securing the country’s energy supply.
