Revenue collection witnessed a significant jump in May, showing a 29% year-on-year increase, attributed to eased import restrictions and improved monitoring, according to the National Board of Revenue (NBR). Factors contributing to the rise include the collection of dues, favorable judgments, and increased revenue monitoring. Economists suggest that the boost may be driven by the NBR’s efforts to meet International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditions. However, they anticipate a substantial revenue deficit for the current fiscal year. Import restrictions were eased in March, leading to increased revenue collection by Chattogram customs, responsible for 90% of import duty collection. In May, the NBR exceeded its target by over Tk32,000 crore, with remarkable growth in income tax and travel tax collection. Import duty collection increased by about 27% and value-added tax collection rose by over 15%. Although revenue reached Tk2.82 lakh crore in the 11 months till May, falling short of the Tk3.15 lakh crore target by approximately Tk33,000 crore.
