Power production at the Rampal Thermal Power Plant in Bagerhat district, Bangladesh, has been temporarily suspended for maintenance and inspection work. The shutdown began on the night of June 30, 2023 and is expected to last for about a week. Syed Ekramullah, the managing director of the Bangladesh India Friendship Power Company (BIFPCL), stated that a large quantity of coal will arrive on July 5 to support operations. The 1320 MW coal-fired power plant, built under the Indian government’s concessional financing scheme, has an estimated cost of $2 billion. The plant’s unit-1 was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 6, 2022. The temporary halt in production aims to ensure the plant’s efficiency and reliability in the long run.
