The rice exporters of Bangladesh have called on the government to lift the ban on aromatic rice exports in order to protect the country’s international market share. Concerns have arisen among rice exporters about losing the market for aromatic rice to neighboring countries, which are attempting to capture Bangladesh’s fragrant rice market share in light of the export ban imposed by the government. The Bangladesh Rice Exporters Association (BREA) has requested that the relevant authorities take necessary steps to address this issue, citing a bumper production of aromatic rice by farmers this season.
BREA recently sent a letter to the commerce ministry seeking special export permission for its members. The ban on aromatic rice exports was initially imposed by the commerce ministry on June 30, 2022, to control prices in the local market. However, the ministry has indicated that it is considering allowing the export of aromatic rice in the near future. Various types of aromatic rice, including Chinigura, Kalijeera, Kataribhog, Basmati (locally known as Banglamoti), and Nenia, are in high demand in overseas markets.
