The price of green chillies in the market has started to decline as the supply of domestic chillies has increased, and imports from India have resumed. In wholesale vegetable markets, the price of green chillies has dropped by Tk 250 to Tk 300 per kg in areas like Bogra and Pabna. However, this reduction in price has not yet been reflected at the retail level. Prior to Eid-ul-Azha, the price of green chillies surged, reaching as high as Tk 700-800 per kg in some areas. In the capital city of Dhaka, green chillies were being sold for Tk 400-500 per kg in the wholesale market and up to Tk 600 in retail markets.
However, the prices are now falling in production areas, such as Santhia and Bara upazilas of Pabna, where farmers are selling chillies to traders at lower rates. The government’s decision to allow importation of green chillies from India has also contributed to the declining prices. Trucks carrying Indian green chillies have started entering the country through various land ports, easing the supply situation. Nonetheless, reports from West Bengal, India indicate that pepper prices have risen due to recent heavy rains.
