Living costs have surged worldwide due to the ripple effect of the Russia-Ukraine war, leading to an increase in the prices of imported goods. Bangladesh has also experienced a significant rise in essential commodity prices, with fertilizers witnessing the highest increase of 105%. A survey conducted by Action Aid emphasizes the importance of keeping fertilizer prices stable to ensure food security and mitigate the impact on farmers’ production costs. The soaring living costs in Bangladesh, including fertilizers (105%), sugar (60%), petrol (47%), and sanitary pads (23%), have disproportionately affected marginalized communities, particularly women and children, compromising their education, nutrition, and health. Despite the decline in global prices since February 2022, the survey reveals that fertilizers have risen by over 115%, impacting child marriage rates, women’s health, and mental well-being. Action Aid urges a comprehensive approach and sufficient funding to address interconnected crises, including climate change, debt stress, and the consequences of the Russia-Ukraine war, emphasizing the need for social protection measures and investments in agro-ecological farming and renewable energy.
