During the Eid holiday, a remarkable migration took place in Dhaka, with over 7 million SIM users departing the city in just three days. Post and Telecommunication Minister Mustafa Jabbar confirmed the figures, revealing that 2.4 million SIM users bid farewell to the capital on Eid day alone, while 556,281 new SIM users entered Dhaka during the same period. Grameenphone held the largest share of SIM users, followed by Robi, Banglalink, and Teletalk.
In the preceding two days, approximately 550,000 SIM users left Dhaka, with a staggering 3.1 million users departing on June 28th and 1.9 million on June 27th. Additionally, rural phone users also left the capital, with Robi, Banglalink, and Teletalk users joining the exodus. It’s worth noting that these figures do not represent unique individuals, as one person may have multiple SIMs. Furthermore, there are individuals, including children, who left Dhaka without utilizing any mobile SIM, making them unaccounted for in the SIM registration records.
The mass movement of people during Eid highlights the significant role of mobile communication in connecting individuals and facilitating their journeys. These figures provide valuable insights into the scale of population movement and the importance of mobile connectivity in Bangladesh during festive seasons.
