Bangladesh’s ceramic product exports reached a four-year high in the recently concluded fiscal year 2020-2023, although growth slowed due to manufacturers’ inability to deliver products on time caused by a gas shortage, official data reveals. The export of ceramic products fetched $43.39 million, marking a 4.91% year-on-year increase in 2022-23. However, this growth rate is lower than the 32.95% and 11.23% growth recorded in the previous two fiscal years.
The shortage of gas supply and interruptions impacted production, resulting in a failure to meet around 30% of orders. The gas crisis arose after the government halted direct purchases of liquefied natural gas from the international spot market. Despite these challenges, the government’s 10% cash incentive for ceramic exports is seen as encouraging. The sector, which employs around 500,000 workers, mainly produces tiles, tableware, and sanitaryware and exports to over 50 countries.
