The solar home systems program in Bangladesh, aimed at providing electricity to remote areas, is facing challenges due to poor quality equipment, unpaid dues, and the expansion of grid electricity. Many of the distributed systems have become inoperative, primarily due to low-quality batteries and inverters. The Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL), responsible for distributing solar systems, is yet to recover around Tk850 crore from partner organizations. The lack of coordination among stakeholders, coupled with the distribution of free solar systems under other government programs, has further complicated the situation. The inability to pay installments, declining market demand, and discontinued after-sales services have further contributed to the struggles of the program. Efforts to recover dues and improve the quality of equipment are essential for the long-term sustainability of the solar home systems initiative in Bangladesh.
