The Matarbari thermal power plant, backed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is set to begin generating electricity in January 2024. The successful test commissioning in June has paved the way for its scheduled commercial production in early 2024.
Initially producing 600MW of electricity with around 400,000 tonnes of coal already received, an additional 600MW will be added by March 2024. The Ultra Supercritical Coal-Fired Power Plant’s construction progress is approximately 80% complete, with a cost of Tk 518.55 billion.
The project is part of the Moheshkhali power complex, aiming to establish several coal and gas-fired plants, contributing to Bangladesh’s power development. Spanning 1,500 acres of land, the thermal power plant consists of two units with an installed capacity of 600 MW each. Toshiba, Sumitomo, and IHI form the consortium responsible for the engineering, procurement, and construction contract.
