Nepal is gearing up to change the hydropower projects that will export electricity to Bangladesh once a tripartite agreement involving India is signed. Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) will send a list of alternative hydropower projects to India for approval after resolving the issue of electricity tariff. Initially, India agreed to allow the transmission of up to 40 megawatts of electricity through its existing line for Nepal’s power export to Bangladesh. Therefore, NEA plans to sell electricity generated by the 24MW Trishuli Hydropower Project and another project with a combined capacity of 40MW-41MW. Bangladesh and Nepal are negotiating a long-term power trade agreement for the export of 40MW of electricity. The approval process is expected to be expedited by selecting projects already approved for exporting power to India.
