The Rampal thermal power plant in Bangladesh has experienced its sixth shutdown since its launch in December 2022 due to a coal shortage. The first unit’s production was halted on 30th July, and authorities expect it to resume once coal imports arrive on 8th August. The 1,320 MW coal-fired power plant has faced several shutdowns in the last seven months, raising concerns about the smooth start of the second unit’s production. The project, constructed under India’s concessional financing scheme, has been set up at a cost of $2 billion. Additionally, another major power station in the southern region, the Payra Thermal Power Plant, also faced coal shortages and temporary shutdowns recently. On a positive note, the Matarbari power plant’s first unit in Cox’s Bazar started production on a trial basis, synchronizing 150 MW of electricity with the national grid.
