Government plans to launch “Government School Feeding Programme-Phase-1,” targeting 3.5 million children in 18,000-19,000 government primary schools across 150 upazilas. The project aims to increase enrollment, and attendance, and reduce dropouts in poverty-prone areas. Estimated at Tk6,000 crore, the program will provide food to students during school hours throughout the year. Discussions with development partners, including the International Cooperation Agency, are underway for funding. Two food distribution modalities will be implemented: a diversified food basket and nutritious cooked meals. Feasibility studies suggest fortified biscuits as the cheapest option, costing Tk18.74 per child per day. The program previously covered 30 lakh schoolchildren in 104 upazilas, financed by the government and the World Food Program, until its phase-out in June 2022 due to the pandemic. With strong numbers backing the initiative, it aims to enhance children’s well-being and educational outcomes.
