Gaibandha sees an improved electricity situation with the inauguration of Teesta Solar, the country’s largest solar power plant, by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The 200-megawatt plant, constructed by Beximco Group and Beximco Power Limited, began supplying power to the national grid experimentally in December 2022. With around five lakh solar panels, the plant is expected to alleviate the power crisis in the northern region, including the Gaibandha district. A 35-kilometer transmission line and substations have been set up to connect the plant to the national grid via Rangpur. The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Teesta Solar Limited for electricity procurement. The plant’s operation is benefiting the people of the district.
