The guava season is in full swing in southern Bangladesh, with farmers and traders actively harvesting and selling the fruit in local markets. The opening of Padma Bridge has improved road connectivity, allowing guava to reach different parts of the country, including Dhaka. This development has led to the daily transportation of 100 to 150 tonnes of guava worth Tk 10-15 lakh by trucks and trawlers. The region’s guava markets, known for floating guava markets, have become a tourist attraction, welcoming nearly 5,000 tourists every week. The guava cultivation area spans 24,588 hectares in the Barishal division, producing 25,000 tonnes of fruit worth more than Tk 25 crore. Despite drought affecting yields this year, farmers are content with the current market price. Local farmers call for improved access to bank finance and suggest that setting up agro-processing industries could significantly boost the local economy.
