Bangladesh’s Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant has finalized its nuclear fuel acquisition, marking ownership of the resource. The project director signed the acceptance protocol, and the first batch of nuclear fuel is expected to arrive in September-October 2023. The project is a $13 billion venture supported by Russia’s technical and financial aid. The plant’s first 2,400MW unit is scheduled for commercial operation in Q1 2024. The fuel, sourced from Russia, will be transported under stringent security, supervised by the Bangladesh Army. While the upfront costs are high, the project’s long-term potential for cheap, emissions-free power makes it a strategic investment.
